Philosophy of Education
I want to teach because I believe that by providing students with the same opportunities and creating an environment in which they can succeed in, all children can learn. I want to teach art because the art classes I took were what got me through school and discovered my strong passion for creating art and now teaching it to others. I believe that valuable and meaning experiences in art help students with personal fulfillment and creative development. When teaching art I take into consideration age appropriate skills regarding a student’s instructional needs. I want to teach art that reflects the real world, introducing all types of artists from different parts of the world and social conciseness and the awareness of art in society.
When I teach I try and have a strong presence in the classroom and demonstrate appropriate self-esteem and self-assurance and a sense of authority and mutual respect. I create lessons that are meaningful and establish high interest while also supporting my curriculum. I use clear directions but leave room for each student to express their own ideas and creativity. In a lesson where I had my students create their own comic strip, the directions asked for the students to use four panels in their comic strip but one student asked if they could do more and they ended up making a whole story with many panels. I enjoy when a student asks to do something a little more, or has an idea that they want to go with and I encourage all my students to do so.
I support a collaborative learning environment and make my lessons bot only educational but enjoyable as well. I review what went well and what can be improved on in an effort to improve my instructional practices. I created a lesson plan for my students that unfortunately did not work when I taught it and we couldn’t use what they started working on for the next class so I had to create a whole new lesson and somehow explain to my students that a whole class day of work wasn’t going to lead anywhere. I came up with a new lesson plan using the same idea as the one before but changed the materials so that it worked for the class. I used this mishap as a lesson for our students and talked about how the process of making art does not always go as planned and that sometimes things break, or get ruined and that it is important to never let that discourage you.
